Antep Bros Turkish Kebabs

I reckon Antep Bros Turkish Kebabs could very possibly be the best Turkish food / kebab place in Western Australia, if not, the whole country! This was an unexpected find when I was in the area, and the food blew my mind.

I order the regular size Mixed Meat Box ($17) but it looked even biggest than the standard large portion! The meal box comes with a balanced heaps of meat, fries, and fresh, refreshing Turkish Shepherd’s salad. The chicken and doner were flavorful and not tough to chew, and pairs well with the generous amount of sauce of my choice. Even the fries are not of mediocre quality, they were golden and crispy. The salad was very refreshing in this heavy meal, thanks to the lemon juice and the freshness of the vegetables. In the end, this one box became my lunch and dinner, and I am a big eater.

The other Turkish food look really good and authentic too. They have the usual kebab wraps, but also the less common dishes, such as pide, gozleme, Turkish breads and dips.

Mount Barker Country Bakery in the quiet town of Mt Barker in Western Australia stands out as a multi-year best pies awards winner. At around $8.50-$9.80 a pie, I’d say it’s a bargain for a bakery with such high reputation.

peppered steak pie
pepper steak pie

The Peppered Steak Pie was flavorful, it’s got all the vital flavors right. I thought the it was too ‘gravy’ at first, but the big chunks of meat stood out in the gooey goodness.

Mount Barker Country Bakery steak and mushroom pie

Same goes with the Steak & Mushroom Pie, and I love the big chunky mushrooms.

Mount Barker Country Bakery chunky chicken real truffles and mushroom pie

This is the Chunky Chicken, Real Truffles & Mushroom Pie. I can’t tell if I can taste the truffles, but I can say that the pie was delicious!

Mount Barker Country Bakery Jalapeno sausage roll

The Jalapenos Sausage Roll ($7.50) truly wow me. The spicy and tangy jalapenos pair really well with the fatty minced meat. Also, it’s huge! I think this is the best sausage roll I had so far.

Mount Barker Country Bakery Vanilla Slice

The Vanilla Slice ($7) is of decent size, milky rich and not too sweet. Just how I like it.

The patin fish (RM20-22) was fresh and tasty, and the tempoyak sauce was balanced in spiciness, sweetness, but rather watery (could be richer to be eaten with the rice). Nevertheless, the flavors are ‘oomph’ enough. The Daging Salai Masak Lemak Maman (RM10) was rich and flavorful, cooked together with the vegetable so you’ll get sayur masak lemak at the same time. Among the famed Ikan Patin Tempoyak shops in Temerloh, Selera Patin Bangau Temerloh would be crowned the spiciest of them all. The gulai tempoyak (fermented durian curry) is also sweeter than usual, maybe to tone down the spiciness of the dish, served piping hot from the pot.

The patin fish was fresh, soft and sweet. Other than being quite spicy and sweet, the aroma of the tempoyak wasn’t that strong. Price of the fish starts from RM20+ per piece, and you get to choose the head, body or tail (if available). The other side dishes are pre-packed in single-use plastic containers, which I find unappetizing and not environmental friendly. I order the patin tempoyak (1 piece of fish) and a plate of rice (RM2). The total came out to be RM24.

張家傳統炭燒福州餅 Diong Gong Piang Kampung Koh Kompia

張家傳統炭燒福州餅, also known as Diong Gong Piang, is a small shop selling traditional Fuchow bagels called kompia / gong pia / gong piang (光饼).  Diong’s versions are the traditional spring onion kompia, and the pork and chive kompia.

Their version of kompia is more ‘bready’ and thicker than the usual ones. Some might complain the floury feel of the kompia and prefer the more popular Cheong Cia Gong Pian in town. However, it does present a different style and some might like it better than the others. Well, at least you don’t need to queue for 30-45 minutes to get your kompia.

Probably due to the unpredictable flow of customers, and the kompia are made fresh in batches, I notice sometimes this shop has a full cart of kompia, ready to be sold, and sometimes with an empty cart waiting for the next batch, you may want to consider calling to pre-order if you don’t want to try your luck.

張家傳統炭燒福州餅 Diong Gong Piang Kampung Koh Kompia Pork and Chive

Because of the thickness, the Pork & Chives Kompia (the ones with sesame on the outside) is a little similar to a dense meat bun with hard crisp outer layer. For me, it is not too hard or floury, as the pork is tender and flavorful. In fact, having a thin one might end up getting overpowered by the pork.

張家傳統炭燒福州餅 Diong Gong Piang Kampung Koh Kompia Traditional Spring Onion

The traditional one comes with a bit of spring onion and infused oil. For this, I do felt the kompia is a little too thick but it wasn’t a deal-breaker. I still enjoy the bite with the crispy oiled outer layer.

2 pieces of Pork & Chives Kompia and 2 pieces of Traditional Spring Onion Kompia costed me RM9.20.

When one think of Teluk Intan, mostly likely Teluk Intan Leaning Tower and Chee Cheong Fun come into the mind.

Also known as Anson Chee Cheong Fun (Teluk Intan was called Teluk Anson, named by the British during colonial times), Liew Kee (Ah Lek) Chee Cheong Fun is probably the original one who created this fame. First started operating famously at a house, it moved to a shop lot but the recipe stays.

Unlike the most typical chee cheong fun (steamed rice noodle rolls) that are plain and served with sauce or curry, Teluk Intan Chee Cheong Fun (RM8) are embedded with savory dried shrimps, and preserved radish, and served with a drizzle of sesame oil (game-changer), paired with pickled green chilies. All the savory but not overpowering flavors pair very nicely with the soft and slightly chewy rolls of chee cheong fun.

There is also a newer shop nearby, 新燎记加料猪肠粉(亚權)Sun Liew Kee, that sells the same thing but with a slight difference in taste and texture. Unfortunately it was closed when I visited near (but before) their closing time, so I couldn’t compare.

Strangers at 47 crepes

Strangers at 47 in Section 17, Petaling Jaya started in 2014 and is still going strong and popular. Offering crepes as their signature menu, they attract both cafe hoppers and casual food tasters alike.

On this visit, we ordered 2 savory crepes and shared among 3 person, and it was quite filling. The Shore To Please (RM26.50) is a seafood savory crepe with Cajun style tiger prawns, battered squid, sautéed spinach, caramelized onion, cherry tomatoes, and salted egg yolk sauce. All the meat and vege pair well with the savory crepe, and the creamy salted egg yolk sauce takes them to the next level.

Strangers at 47 crepes

The Buttermilk Chicken Crepe (RM26) is also a savory crepe with buttermilk fried chicken, housemade sauce, white and purple cabbage, and corns. Maybe because the chicken is deep fried, it wasn’t as ‘harmoni’ with the crepe as the first one. Still, the fried chicken is good. I reckon A Hen’s Crush (RM25) would be excellent with the Cajun style pan-seared chicken.

Menya Musashi 1 Utama Shiro White Garlic Ramen

Menya Musashi in 1 Utama Shopping Centre is part of a famous Japanese ramen chain known for its samurai theme and rich broths. There are 4 types of broths you can choose, infused with different flavor oils: White/Shiro (onion), Black/Kuro (garlic), Red/Aka (spicy), and Yellow/Ki (curry). The basic ramen costs RM26 which comes with their signature ingredients: bamboo shoots, black fungus and spring onions. The ‘Musashi Ramen’ costs RM32 and comes with the above, plus a slice of chashu (braised pork belly) and half of an ajitama (soy egg).

The first ramen I tried (above) was with the white onion flavored broth. The broth was rich and thick, with intense flavors of the onion oil and pork broth. If you like strong flavored ramen broth, Menya Musashi would suit your taste. The strong aroma also covers the smell of the bamboo shoots that some might reject. The chashu was decent but it didn’t feel like the star of the show. The meat wasn’t dry, but somehow flakey (I guess because it’s thin). Fortunately, the web of fat distributed all over the meat balanced it all. The noodle, however, was a bit of a let down. It felt a little soggy and not al dente enough for my preference. It kinda felt like yellow noodle.

Menya Musashi 1 Utama Kuro Black Garlic Ramen

My second try was the ramen with black garlic flavored broth. Everything else was similar but this broth was of course different from the white onion broth. It has the unique flavor of the aged blacken garlic: sweet, savory, and garlicky aftertaste.

This was an order of the RM35 lunch set (11am-3pm) that comes with green tea and a side of your choice: gyoza, chicken karaage, or small rice (teriyaki pork / mentai takana – fish roe with pickled mustard greens / cooked salmon). I chose the cooked salmon rice but it wasn’t that good: bland and dry cooked salmon.

Menya Musashi 1 Utama Operating hours:

Friday to Saturday: 11.30am – 10.30pm

H&H Restaurant & Catering is a simple setup yet comfortable restaurant that also do food catering in-house and on-site. They offer a wide range of menu and based on reviews, their dishes always deliver / exceed expectations.

H and H Restaurant and Catering Curry Fish Head

The Curry Fish Head (RM28.90) was more liquidly in consistency but the taste is surprisingly rich and flavorful. It is not very spicy and fish was fresh and sweet.

H and H Restaurant and Catering Kapitan Chicken

The Kapitan Chicken (RM25.20) was excellent in flavors. The spices are balance and not that strong (in a good way where the other dishes are not overpowered by this). The chicken were cooked just right (tender).

H and H Restaurant and Catering Crispy Fried Sotong

The Crispy Fried Sotong (RM20.90) also showed the chef’s skill, as they were crispy on the outside, but the squids were never rubbery. They were still tender and nice to bite into.
