Arrowtown Bakery Steak and Cheese Pie

Arrowtown Bakery, my favorite shop in my favorite small town in New Zealand! Neighboring to the busy Queentown, the rustic Arrowtown offers a modern village vibe where locals and tourists blend in together. The bakery is unofficially a “must-visit” for anyone who dropped by to Arrowtown, known for its famous pies and irresistible “Breakfast Buttie” – Hot fried bacon, egg, hash brown and sausage layered together, sandwiched between a saucy burger bun, freshly baked in the bakery.

Arrowtown Bakery Thai Green Chicken Pie

The pies ($6.80) were my favorite, and I can unashamedly say that I have tried all the pies in this bakery. My favorites are Venison Pie, Steak & Mushroom Pie, and Hot & Spicy Chicken Pie. Even the Vege Pie is surprisingly good!

Arrowtown Bakery Mince and Cheese Pie
Arrowtown Bakery Hot and Spicy Chicken Pie

They also make Asian fusion pies such as Thai Green Curry Pies and Butter Chicken Pies, which are both locals’ favorite and nearby Asian residents or workers’ favorite. Other more traditional selections include Plain Steak Pies, Steak & Cheese Pies, Steak Bacon & Chees Pies, Mince Pies, Mince & Cheese Pies, Lamb & Mint Pies, and Creamy Chicken Pies. All of them are the same price at $6.80.

Arrowtown Bakery filled rolls

Other than pies, their offer a wide selection of delicious Filled Rolls ($7.50), “Footballs” (long shaped filled buns; $8), Panini ($10) and Croissants ($4 for plain, $8 for ham + cheese + tomato). Oh, if you’re early and lucky to get your hands on their Almond Croissants and Cinnamon Scrolls, you have to try them!

Bacon and egg filo
Mousetrap food

Bacon & Egg Filo ($6.50), Mousetrap ($6.50), Raspberry Iced Bun ($5), Lamington ($5) and Lollicake ($4.80) are some of the traditional Kiwi bakery food you can find here.

Arrowtown Bakery slices and cakes

Why not finish your meal with a guilty slice of sweet desert? I recommend the Custard Slice, Apple Slice, and Carrot Cake, but everything looks so tempting, right? And look at those Cream Donuts and Eclairs! (Those are fresh cream made in the kitchen, why is the key to smooth and fragrant cream)

First started beside a Cheras flat, Woo Pin Fish Head Noodle now has branches around KL. One of the busiest branches is at Woo Pin 45 Kamunting in Kuala Lumpur Central.

I had the Fish Head Noodle (RM13.50) with fried fish option. It came with 3-4 pieces of fried fish fillet (normal to have lots of bones), and a chunk of fried fish head. The fish were well fried without getting too hard to dry, and the outer layer was quite crispy too. The broth, however, lacked the fish flavors, only backed up by the saltiness from the salted veggies, and the sourness from the tomatoes. The chili sauce packed a flavorful, tangy punch. You can opt for several types of noodles.

Woo Pin 45 Kamunting Portuguese Egg Tarts

This branch is also famous for their freshly baked Portuguese Egg Tarts (RM4 each). The pastry layers of the egg tart were buttery, crispy and well-defined. I like the egg custard filling texture but it was too sweet for me.

Chapathi Recipes Restaurant Cheras Taman Connaught

Chapathi Recipes is a North Indian restaurant in Taman Connaught, Cheras. It features a wide variety of Indian cuisines, served in the comfortable, air-conditioned space. I order their Bread Basket (RM22), which consists of five different breads each: Chapati, Tandoori Roti, Garlic Naan, Butter Naan, and Aloo Paratha (potato stuffed bread). Nothing much to comment for the average chapati and tandoori roti, but the other breads were pretty good. The naans were buttery and not too thick. The aloo paratha had the nice spiced potato fillings that didn’t feel too heavy (carbs on carbs).

Note: These were on take-aways, hence the plastic containers and the lack of ‘bread basket’.

Also, I order the Butter Chicken (RM18) and Palak Paneer (RM17). The well-spiced Butter Chicken was not as spicy as it looked, but the flavors were nice and strong. The boneless chicken chunks were not too dry. The Palak Paneer was a little more spicier as some chili oil was poured onto it; a gentle kick, nothing overwhelming. I have a light palate and I found both dishes quite salty.

Wild Boar Curry: The meat given was in meaty slices instead of chunks. The texture was rather dry but was covered by the hot curry which looked and tasted more like sambal with belacan and sugar.

Fergburger Queenstown New Zealand

Probably the most famous burger joint in the world, Fergburger first started out from a garage off an obscure lane. Eventually, it has became one of the most wanted eateries in almost every international foodies and travelers’ hit list. Is it worth the visit, or is this just a FOMO hype?

When I visited Fergburger during slight off-peak hour, the queueing line was still pretty long. There was a wait before it’s my turn to order, but it wasn’t too bad for me. After ordering my burger, the wait for the food to be prepared was bit longer than the wait to order.

To try the real taste of their good burger, I ordered the most traditional ‘The Fergburger’ ($16.50). It’s the no-nonsense beef patty (prime New Zealand beef) burger with lettuce, tomato, red onion, aioli & tomato relish.

The verdict: Yes, the burger was delicious! The beef patty was juicy and flavorful, and the burger bun had just the right texture and thickness. Everything was fresh (they source the lettuce from the only local premium lettuce farm nearby, rather than the cheaper ones that can only be obtained via longer delivery journey).

Is it worth it?: Looking at the price, I would say it is an excellent value considering the place being in the touristy, expensive Queenstown. A lot of food around here are more expensive than that. It’s much more valuable than McDonald’s to be real! As for the waiting time, if you are not in a rush, it is totally worth the wait. I mean, it’s not the ‘best’ burger in the world, I wouldn’t travel a long way just to eat Fergburger, but it’s a place I’m happy to go and know that I will be satisfied!

Fergbaker Pork Belly Pie

While waiting for my burger, I visited Fergbaker next door to get a Pork Belly Pie ($6.80). The pastry was on point, and the pork belly (layered in fat and tender meat) was superb!

Fergbaker, along with Ferg’s Bar and Mrs Ferg (gelato & sorbets), are expansions of the Fergburger business (each one next to the other).

Ban Lee Bak Kut Teh (万利肉骨茶餐室) is one of the top bak kut teh place in Kuala Lumpur. I like their broth that tasted very herby (a slight bit too salty for my liking but still alright eating with rice) and the cooking quality of the meat. I had the default mixed bak kut teh and there were mixed pork such as belly, ribs and even intestines (so remember to ask for meat only if you don’t eat offal). Button mushrooms and enoki were included for tasty nutritious boost, along with bean curd skin and vege.

Ban Lee Bak Kut Teh

One photo is not enough to capture everything in the pot, so here are what hiding underneath and other ingredients. Total bill was RM26 including a bowl of white rice and a bowl of add-on taupok (tofu puffs).

Chee Kong Roasted Pork Ipoh

Chee Kong Roasted Pork (浙江烧肉) is probably the most famous roasters stall in Ipoh. When I arrive 30 minutes before the stall is open, there were already a line (locals and tourists) waiting at the empty stall. Not long after the operators arrived with the loads of roasted meat, you’ll see a galore of meaty goodness.

Chee Kong Roasted Pork Rice Ipoh

I dined in for a plate of their Roasted Pork Rice (RM6). The roasted pork with some braised sauce is served on white rice, along with two slices of cucumber and chili sauce. The roasted pork was indeed delicious, meat and fat well-balance, and the skin was super crispy without any hard spot. However, the small portion didn’t feel satisfying. I would recommend buying just the roasted pork in the larger quality (say RM15).

Chee Kong Roasted Pork Sausage

While waiting for my turn I noticed many patrons ordering the Roasted Sausage. Out of curiosity, I order a small RM15 take away to give it a try. It was decent but not something I like, good texture though.
