Lekor Losong Keping Aneka Keropok is a store supplying freshly made losong and ready packed keropok lekor (they are a kind of snack made of grinded fish and sago flour). It is a popular stop among local drivers and also nearby university students to grab their supply of fish snacks while passing by.

I arrived near closing time so I did not see the process of making these losong, and the ones available were already packed in bags and no longer warm. Anyway, I got one bag (somewhere RM4-6, can’t remember) of soft type lekor losong for takeaway back to hotel. It was already cold when I eat it (you can reheat them but I couldn’t do it in the hotel) but the taste was still okay. The fish taste wasn’t that strong but considered alright, not too floury. The bite felt soft and less chewy. The chili sauce, as expected in Kelantan, is sweet (not spicy).

Laksa Sarang Kedai Makan Gunung Reng Jeli Kelantan

You’ve probably heard all kinds of laksa in Malaysia, but have you heard of Laksa Sarang (nested laksa)? You’ll find one at Kedai Makan Gunung Reng (RM7.50). They may not be the first one to invent this dish, but I think theirs would be the most presentable one!

Laksa Sarang is basically Asam Laksa with a twist: Adding loads of fried egg floss to make a ‘nest’. I find the laksa broth here very sweet (typical Kelantan style) but still very enjoyable with the tangy, sour mix. The vegetables and pineapple were fresh. The egg floss was probably made beforehand but it didn’t feel too oily or satiating.

When at the area, do take a walk around Gunung Reng and explore the interesting caves (you’ll spot it from the shop).

Akok Belahat Jeli Kelantan
Akok Belahat Jeli

Enjoy this soft, custardy and sweet egg desert at Akok Belahat. Akok is a traditional desert/snack in Kelantan and Terengganu. It is made with flour, sugar, eggs, and coconut milk.

This shop at the side of the road in Kampung Belahat is probably the best and most famous akok shop in Jeli, Kelantan. I like the strong eggy taste of these akok (3 pieces for RM2; 8 pieces for RM5). I’m guessing that brown sugar or palm sugar is used as their akok have a darker color and deeper flavors of dark sugar. They were pretty sweet though (typical Kelate sweetness).

Akok Belahat Kelantan

Looking behind the ordering counter, you can see how these delicious akok are made traditionally: baked in a brass mold covered with smoldering charcoal.

Waiting time may be long when there is a queue, as the akok are slowy baked rounds by rounds. I received them fresh out of the charcoal are they were hot!

If you are planning order a large amount, or don’t want to wait in queue for a long time, you may call them at +6019 980 8457 / +6011 1080 8831 to preorder.

Steamed Fish (White Tail): With close proximity to the river, you can ensure that their fresh water fish sold here are fresh. The fish recipe was the standard decent kind but with extra freshness, hence with it’s with sweet natural flavors, enhanced by the light soy sauce and gravy.

Kedai Makan 888 茶餐室 Gua Musang Fried Pork Belly

Fried Pork Belly: I think this simple dish was one of their must-try dishes. The thin sliced pork belly was stir fried in oil, until the meat almost becoming crispy. It was a salty, flavorful dish which goes very well with white rice. It was quite oily and salty but I guess that’s what made it good.

On a side note: Wild boars meat was in high demand in this shop. I saw many passersby tried to order batches of wild boar curry but the meat was out of stock. I overheard that they source the meat from the native hunters nearby.

Kedai Makan 888 茶餐室 Gua Musang

I also ordered a plate of simple stir fried vegetables, but it was very salty. I even bit some chunks of undissolved salt in the vegetables.

All of the dishes above, plus one plate of rice and a glass of barley (instant mix kind) costed me RM27.

Restoran Kak Zah, Gua Musang Nasi Dagang Kelantan Food

Not distracted by the many choices of dishes, I order just the simple set of Nasi Dagang Gulai Ayam (RM6.50). The rice here at Restoran Kak Zah could easily be one of the best nasi dagang I had. There are a selection of white rice, nasi minyak, nasi kerabu, and nasi dagang. I opted for nasi dagang and the rice was nicely cooked in rich coconut milk. Even though I had packed it for a few hours before eating it, the rice remained wholesome and shiny. The nasi dagang is cooked with a certain ratio of white rice and glutinous rice, hence a little more sticky and firm in a nice way. For the chicken curry, the chicken meat was decent and the curry was aromatic and flavorful. It wasn’t so much of spiciness but more on the flavors of the spices.

Even this cat approves *cat paw thumbs up*

田雞粥板面 Pan Mee Gua Musang Frog Porridge

Frog Leg Porridge (RM13): The porridge had its own unique style, which differs from the Hong Kong or Teochew style. I guess the closest description was it’s in the middle of both style, neither watery nor think. The flavors were good with a little mixtures of sesame oil, fired shallots oil, and of course, the sweetness from the frogs. The frog meat were surprisingly soft and tender. They did have some springiness to it but not too much. The amount of frog meat in the porridge was quite a lot, about 7 pieces if I remembered it right, with mostly frog’s legs.

田雞粥板面 Pan Mee Gua Musang is also popular for their claypot pan mee, and they even have frog pan mee.

满月板面 Man Yek Ban Mee Gua Musang Kelantan

Pan Mee RM6 (with add-on fish and pork balls +RM1): You get to choose either the long sliced style pan mee or the teared style one. Even with the teared style pan mee, it wasn’t hand-teared but looked rolled and cut instead. Anyhow, the texture was how I like it. The thickness was just right to have a al dente bite, yet thin enough to feel it’s lightness. I say that they chose the perfect thickness for the pan mee. The hearty anchovies broth was sweet and well balanced, not too salty and neither too light nor heavy. My photo did no justice to the pan mee because the generous amount of pork slices and vegetables were hidden underneath the delicious noodles. Not to forget the hot and sour chili sauce was a blast too!
