First started beside a Cheras flat, Woo Pin Fish Head Noodle now has branches around KL. One of the busiest branches is at Woo Pin 45 Kamunting in Kuala Lumpur Central.

I had the Fish Head Noodle (RM13.50) with fried fish option. It came with 3-4 pieces of fried fish fillet (normal to have lots of bones), and a chunk of fried fish head. The fish were well fried without getting too hard to dry, and the outer layer was quite crispy too. The broth, however, lacked the fish flavors, only backed up by the saltiness from the salted veggies, and the sourness from the tomatoes. The chili sauce packed a flavorful, tangy punch. You can opt for several types of noodles.

Woo Pin 45 Kamunting Portuguese Egg Tarts

This branch is also famous for their freshly baked Portuguese Egg Tarts (RM4 each). The pastry layers of the egg tart were buttery, crispy and well-defined. I like the egg custard filling texture but it was too sweet for me.

Woo Pin 45 Kamunting Fish Head Noodle Operating hours:

Sunday: Closed

Monday to Saturday: 7.30am – 4pm

Fish Head Noodle – RM13.50

Chapathi Recipes Restaurant Cheras Taman Connaught

Chapathi Recipes is a North Indian restaurant in Taman Connaught, Cheras. It features a wide variety of Indian cuisines, served in the comfortable, air-conditioned space. I order their Bread Basket (RM22), which consists of five different breads each: Chapati, Tandoori Roti, Garlic Naan, Butter Naan, and Aloo Paratha (potato stuffed bread). Nothing much to comment for the average chapati and tandoori roti, but the other breads were pretty good. The naans were buttery and not too thick. The aloo paratha had the nice spiced potato fillings that didn’t feel too heavy (carbs on carbs).

Note: These were on take-aways, hence the plastic containers and the lack of ‘bread basket’.

Also, I order the Butter Chicken (RM18) and Palak Paneer (RM17). The well-spiced Butter Chicken was not as spicy as it looked, but the flavors were nice and strong. The boneless chicken chunks were not too dry. The Palak Paneer was a little more spicier as some chili oil was poured onto it; a gentle kick, nothing overwhelming. I have a light palate and I found both dishes quite salty.

Ban Lee Bak Kut Teh (万利肉骨茶餐室) is one of the top bak kut teh place in Kuala Lumpur. I like their broth that tasted very herby (a slight bit too salty for my liking but still alright eating with rice) and the cooking quality of the meat. I had the default mixed bak kut teh and there were mixed pork such as belly, ribs and even intestines (so remember to ask for meat only if you don’t eat offal). Button mushrooms and enoki were included for tasty nutritious boost, along with bean curd skin and vege.

Ban Lee Bak Kut Teh

One photo is not enough to capture everything in the pot, so here are what hiding underneath and other ingredients. Total bill was RM26 including a bowl of white rice and a bowl of add-on taupok (tofu puffs).

Restoran Chong Thoong Kee 张东记 is an old restaurant in Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI), featuring Ipoh’s specialty: Kai Si Hor Fun & Beansprout Chicken.

The Kai Si Hor Fun, or Ipoh Chicken Hor Fu (RM7.50 / RM8.50) is the crowd’s favorite. The broth was pretty strong in prawn’s flavors and chicken aroma. There were 2-3 pieces of halved small prawns, shallots and scallions. I added three extra prawn wantans (around RM1 or RM2 I think) and they were alright, quite tiny though.

Kaw Kaw Burger Smokeynizer BEEF Burger
Kaw Kaw Smokeynizer BEEF Burger

Smokeynizer BEEF Burger (double) RM23.50: From the thick and meaty patty, you’ll know it’s the real thing. Each homemade beef patty weighs 165gram, accompanied by Brioche burger bun, heavy mayonnaise, Melbourne Cheese, smoked sauces and chili pickle. Other than the tender patties, the sauces were superb!

The Cabin Melawati The Cabin Burger

The Cabin Burger RM13: Thick homemade beef patty, good seasoning, with fries on the side. A wholesome and delicious grilled burger worth to try!

The Cabin Melawati Mee Hailam Noodle

Kuey Teow Hailam RM8: We did not expect this “under-dish” to be anything spectacular but we were wrong. The noodle and sauce had a very impactful flavor, with much ‘wok hei’ in the dish.

The Cabin Melawati Nasi Goreng Fried Rice

Nasi Goreng The Cabin RM9: There is a saying: “When in doubt, go with fried rice”. Not in this case though, as the fried rice badly lacked ‘wok hei’ and the rice was hard. The chicken chop was passable, although it was quite dry.

The Cabin Melawati Meatballs

Meatballs RM11: We also had meatballs, which included some potato wedges and a piece of toast. A good order to have for some snacks to share among your group.

The Cabin Melawati Pepperoni Pizza

Pepperoni Pizza (small) RM11: A good ol pepperoni pizza, as long as you don’t mind the irregular shape for the personal size pizza.

Sweet Forest Cafe open its first outlet in Setapak, and got viral among the university students for its Salted Egg Sauce Chicken Chop. Currently, there are other two branches located in Puchong and Kepong.

Sweet Forest Cafe Salted Egg Sauce Chicken Chop

Salted Egg Sauce Chicken Chop RM17.90: The sauce was delicious and had very strong salted egg flavor. The chicken chop was thick and meaty.

Sweet Forest Cafe Mushroom Sauce Chicken Chop

Mushroom Sauce Chicken Chop with Spaghetti (RM9.90 lunch set): Other than ordering the original version (RM16.90 for this), they sometimes offer lunch sets which substitute the side ingredients with rice or spaghetti, and served with a bowl of thick mushroom soup and a piece of garlic toast. Contradictory to the salted egg sauce, the mushroom sauce on the chicken chop was too mild and bland to be eaten with the rice/spaghetti. Also compared with the amount of rice, the spaghetti served was very little.

Sweet Forest Cafe Fried Mantis Shrimps with Salted Egg

Fried Mantis Shrimps with Salted Egg (RM15.90): The batter was very crispy and savory, with a tiny piece of mantis shrimp meat coated inside.

Mali’s Corner has two locations in the Setapak area. They have been the go-to spots for many nearby University students and residents. The one located in Platinum Walk is a cafeteria style eatery, while the one at Taman Bunga Raya is a fixed stall by the road.

Mali's Corner Char Kuay Teow Special Setapak

Char Kuey Teow Special RM10: Their main signature. Typical Malay-style char kuey teow which is ‘wet’. Drenched in flavorful gravy, it’s unlike the typical dry fried kuey teow you see. The ‘Special’ version includes more prawns.

Mali's Corner Nasi Lemak

Nasi Lemak Ayam RM6.50: Not everyone fancy the wet char kuey teow, hence Mali’s Corner Nasi Lemak often becomes the star of the show. The rice texture was alright. They gave a surprisingly large amount of sambal, which were on the sweeter side. The spiced fried chicken (Ayam Berempah) was well seasoned and not overcooked.

Location 2 (Taman Bunga Raya):

Operating hours:

Fatt Kee Herbal Soup 发记炖汤 Pig Brain Soup

One of the main reasons I was here was for the Pig Brain Soup 猪脑汤 (RM5), because it is rare to find one and I have never tried it (although I wasn’t sure if I am able to actually eat a brain or not). As a result, I didn’t find it difficult for me to enjoy the custardy tofu-like texture of the brain.

Fatt Kee Herbal Soup 发记炖汤 beggar chicken soup

Beggar Chicken Soup 竹丝鸡汤 (RM5.50): With a whole leg inside. Their soup in general had plenty of herbs and all were tasty. You can really taste the quality of the soup as they used enough good ingredients to boil them.
