Nasi Lemak Ikan Sembilang Lenggeng

Nasi Lemak Ikan Sembilang in Lenggeng, Negeri Sembilan is a humble but popular shop among the small town locals and even passing cyclists. It is known for their nasi lemak, paired with the unique sambal ikan sembilang (catfish) that I’ve never seen elsewhere.

For dining in, the staff will hand you a plate of nasi lemak with the sambal of your choice, but the other dishes are self-service: you simply choose what’s displayed on the table and scoop them up into your plate. I chose the Sambal Ikan Sembilang and added hati ayam masak kicap (soy sauce chicken liver), fried egg, begedil (mashed potato fritter) and some cucumber slices, paired with a glass of hot coffee. The total cost was RM9.50.

The nasi lemak and the dishes are decent but the sambal ikan sembilang stands out as their specialty. The chili sambal is not that spicy but has a strong kick of fragrant from ‘pecah minyak’, or the emulsified oil from frying the chilies and garlics. The catfish pieces looked like they came from small fish. The fish are fried till crispy before being mixed with the sambal.

Other than nasi lemak, they also serve a variety of traditional kuih-muih (Malay snacks and desserts). One particular Malaysian dessert I came here for was the Lepat Pisang. Lepat Pisang is a steamed dessert wrapped with banana leaf. It’s made from mashed bananas, stuffed with shredded coconut sweetened with palm sugar.

Sate tulang (bone satay) is a chicken satay originated from Jelebu, Negeri Sembilan. While there are some subpar versions around, ABM Sate Tulang Jelebu did not fail to impress us with its flavorful, juicy satays.

Sate Tulang (RM1.70 per stick) is made of the bony parts of chicken, such as the ribs. Why? You may ask. I believe its the same reason as why beef/lamb ribs are people’s favorite: meat around the bones are delicious and less ‘boring’ than ‘just meat’!

ABM Sate Tulang Jelebu

ABM Sate Tulang Jelebu’s marination not only coats the satay’s surface but pernitrates deep into the meat for flavorful bites that pair well with the Ketupat (RM0.80). We also had the usual Chicken Satay (RM1.30), Beef Satay (RM1.50) and Lamb Satay. All of them were tasty and not too tough. Good peanut sauce too!

ABM Sate Tulang Jelebu

Other than satay being cooked at the front, the kitchen at the back also caters to various dishes such as grilled chicken and fried rice, which were surprisingly decent.

Sate Ayam (RM1.30)

Resipi Grobok Salai Negeri Sembilan

If you are craving for delicious, authentic Negeri Sembilan Itik/Daging Salai and Masak Lemak Cili Api, Resipi Grobok Salai is the place to go. Featuring a wide range of traditional ‘masakan Negeri Sembilan’ to select from, you’ll find your ‘soul-food’ here. Though be warned, as their food are hot and may be overwhelming for those who can’t take spicy. Well, Resipi Grobok Salai is located in the area called Pedas (literally translated as spicy), and Negeri Sembilan Malay food is well-known to be hot & spicy yet amazingly delicious!

Resipi Grobok Salai is usually quite busy and crowded, but the flow goes pretty fast as you walk through the displayed food and select what you want. The dining area, next to a river, is also huge enough to feel spacious and not stuffy.

I had their signature Itik Salai Masak Lemak Cili Api (smoked duck with rich spicy hot sauce), Daging Salai Masak Lemak (smoked beef with rich spicy hot sauce), Ikan Keli Masak Lemak (catfish with rich spicy hot sauce), Siput Sedut (sea snails, also in the hot sauce), and Telur Itik (duck egg, hard-poached, in the hot sauce).

The smoked duck was surprisingly good as it wasn’t dry or tough. The combining flavors of smoked duck meat and the rich spicy hot sauce pair super well! The smoked beef was also very tender and delicious! Even though both dishes probably use the same hot sauce, each one has a different flavor profile, especially after being smoked. The catfish is also good but less special compared to the duck and beef.

If you have more space available in your tummy, try the poached duck egg. It has a slightly different flavor and texture compared to chicken eggs. And if you taste bud can still handle the spiciness, the seas snails is a good snack to ‘suck’ on (the trick is to suck on the broken hole at the pointy tip of the shell first, followed by sucking the big hole at the base to get the snail meat).

Resipi Grobok Salai Operating hours:

Monday: Closed

Tuesday to Sunday: 10am – 12am

Itik Salai Masak Lemak Cili Api (RM16-18)

Daging Salai Masak Lemak Cili Api (RM15)

Keli Masak Lemak Cili Api (RM6-8)

Ayam Kampung Masak Lemak Cili Api (RM16-18)

Telur Itik (RM4)

Rice (RM2.50)
