Uncle Lim Popiah Penang

A humble narrow stall, with just a sign board writing ‘Poh Piah / Spring Roll Skin’, popularly known as Uncle Lim Popiah, has been operating for more than half a century in the traditional market street of Jalan Chowrasta, Penang.

The owner, known as Uncle Lim, and his daughter, Rebecca, has been running this family business making popiah the traditional way. Look at the unique skill of handling the ball of dough!

While the shop sells mainly on popiah skin in bulks for customers to bring home to make their own recipes, the shop sometimes would sell some products made with their popiah skin, such as fried spring roll and peanut barley (crushed peanut with maltose). They also make and sell peanut maltose candy.

The reason this is one of my top fried oyster omelet places is simple: The oysters were huge! According to the stall owner, these fresh oysters were imported from Thailand. You could see more oysters than egg or starch on your plate. The subtle explosion of sweetness from the sea when you bite into the oysters is just heavenly!

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul is probably the most popular and touristy cendol in Penang. Do expect a queue at all times.

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul

Some might say that this stall is overrated. While it might be true, the Cendol (RM3.30) was actually pretty good although not the best in town. It was sweet and fragrant with the right amount of gula melaka (palm sugar) and condensed milk. It will be in white color when served, remember to stir up the gula melaka underneath to turn it brown.

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul; Jalan Penang Cendol

The Ice Kacang (RM3.50) at Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul wasn’t bad too, it had a generous amount of ingredients.

Saturday to Sunday: 10am – 7.30pm

I prefer Apong Guan’s version as it was softer and fluffier, with a creamier content of corn and banana. It was not too sweet. The texture and thickness was just nice.

福记海鲜 Hock Kee Seafood Penang

Hock Kee Seafood was one of the good restaurants serving both unique and authentic mainstream food. Firstly, we had Seafood Otak-otak In Coconut. There were prawns, otak-otak, squids and shark meat. The sauce was cooked with the coconut juice and it was creamy and eggy. It was too full and couldn’t fit everything into the coconut so the chef had to put some into another bowl.

Hock Kee Seafood Salted Egg Bitter Gourd

Next, the Salted Egg Bitter Gourd was tasty and the prawns were juicy. It was not a heavy salted egg dish but it had just the right amount of fried salted egg to pair with the bitter gourd.

Hock Kee Seafood Cheese Chicken

Lastly, one of the unique dishes in Hock Kee Seafood, the ‘Cheese Chicken’, was more like a ‘Mayonnaise Chicken’, with some cheese flakes and curry leaves. The chicken was deboned and deep fried. However, some might not get used to the taste of mayonnaise in this recipe.

Operating hours:

Tuesday: Closed

Wednesday to Monday: 11am – 2.30pm, 5.30pm – 9.30pm

Eng Yam Rice at Kedai Kopi Sing May Mah Penang

Kedai Kopi Sing May Mah was popular among the locals for its loh mee and also yam rice.

The yam rice made by one of the stall, Eng Yam Rice, was fluffy and balancedly coated with the dark soy sauce. The dried shrimps in the rice occasionally give a salty fragrant flavor boost. And the yam cubes were nice and powdery.

The juicy pork legs and eggs were well-braised by the thick and flavorful sauce. And the mixed pork in pepper soup wasn’t bad at all!

Operating hours:

Kedai Kopi Sing May Mah:

Sunday: 8.30am – 2pm

Monday – Saturday – 8am – 4.30pm

Eng Yam Rice Stall:

10.30am onwards (not sure if the stall has off days)

Sorry, we have lost the record of the price list. Please leave us a comment if you have the menu and pricings 😀
