張家傳統炭燒福州餅 Diong Gong Piang Kampung Koh Kompia

張家傳統炭燒福州餅, also known as Diong Gong Piang, is a small shop selling traditional Fuchow bagels called kompia / gong pia / gong piang (光饼).  Diong’s versions are the traditional spring onion kompia, and the pork and chive kompia.

Their version of kompia is more ‘bready’ and thicker than the usual ones. Some might complain the floury feel of the kompia and prefer the more popular Cheong Cia Gong Pian in town. However, it does present a different style and some might like it better than the others. Well, at least you don’t need to queue for 30-45 minutes to get your kompia.

Probably due to the unpredictable flow of customers, and the kompia are made fresh in batches, I notice sometimes this shop has a full cart of kompia, ready to be sold, and sometimes with an empty cart waiting for the next batch, you may want to consider calling to pre-order if you don’t want to try your luck.

張家傳統炭燒福州餅 Diong Gong Piang Kampung Koh Kompia Pork and Chive

Because of the thickness, the Pork & Chives Kompia (the ones with sesame on the outside) is a little similar to a dense meat bun with hard crisp outer layer. For me, it is not too hard or floury, as the pork is tender and flavorful. In fact, having a thin one might end up getting overpowered by the pork.

張家傳統炭燒福州餅 Diong Gong Piang Kampung Koh Kompia Traditional Spring Onion

The traditional one comes with a bit of spring onion and infused oil. For this, I do felt the kompia is a little too thick but it wasn’t a deal-breaker. I still enjoy the bite with the crispy oiled outer layer.

2 pieces of Pork & Chives Kompia and 2 pieces of Traditional Spring Onion Kompia costed me RM9.20.

I wouldn’t say the food is super amazing, nor the views are breathtaking, but somehow the local vibes and the chill river ambience just hit the spot perfectly. And a satisfying breakfast less than RM5? Sign me up anytime!

P.s. It can be real busy and occupied during peak breakfast hour. I came back around 11am and it had a better, calmer vibe and atmosphere.

When one think of Teluk Intan, mostly likely Teluk Intan Leaning Tower and Chee Cheong Fun come into the mind.

Also known as Anson Chee Cheong Fun (Teluk Intan was called Teluk Anson, named by the British during colonial times), Liew Kee (Ah Lek) Chee Cheong Fun is probably the original one who created this fame. First started operating famously at a house, it moved to a shop lot but the recipe stays.

Unlike the most typical chee cheong fun (steamed rice noodle rolls) that are plain and served with sauce or curry, Teluk Intan Chee Cheong Fun (RM8) are embedded with savory dried shrimps, and preserved radish, and served with a drizzle of sesame oil (game-changer), paired with pickled green chilies. All the savory but not overpowering flavors pair very nicely with the soft and slightly chewy rolls of chee cheong fun.

There is also a newer shop nearby, 新燎记加料猪肠粉(亚權)Sun Liew Kee, that sells the same thing but with a slight difference in taste and texture. Unfortunately it was closed when I visited near (but before) their closing time, so I couldn’t compare.

Chee Kong Roasted Pork Ipoh

Chee Kong Roasted Pork (浙江烧肉) is probably the most famous roasters stall in Ipoh. When I arrive 30 minutes before the stall is open, there were already a line (locals and tourists) waiting at the empty stall. Not long after the operators arrived with the loads of roasted meat, you’ll see a galore of meaty goodness.

Chee Kong Roasted Pork Rice Ipoh

I dined in for a plate of their Roasted Pork Rice (RM6). The roasted pork with some braised sauce is served on white rice, along with two slices of cucumber and chili sauce. The roasted pork was indeed delicious, meat and fat well-balance, and the skin was super crispy without any hard spot. However, the small portion didn’t feel satisfying. I would recommend buying just the roasted pork in the larger quality (say RM15).

Chee Kong Roasted Pork Sausage

While waiting for my turn I noticed many patrons ordering the Roasted Sausage. Out of curiosity, I order a small RM15 take away to give it a try. It was decent but not something I like, good texture though.

In this shop, you can pretty much find every kind of kacang putih, in every bag size from small (RM3) to jumbo (RM50 and above). I bought some kind of thin spicy muruku sticks, bombay mix, and deep fried bitter gourd and they were all enak (tasty) and rangup (crunchy), just like the name of the shop.

Kannaa’s Bamboo Masalla Briyani original branch is in Ipoh, and there is also one in Puchong.

The mutton briyani costed RM17, including the nasi briyani, mutton varuval, an egg, a small scope of vege and chutney, served on a banana leaf. You will also be provided with compliment add-as-you-like curries.

The briyani rice was pretty strong in the herbal flavors and you would find pieces of herbs and spices in the rice. The mutton was so tender I had almost thought they were imitation meat haha. There’s a good spicy kick from the mutton varuval so people who can’t take spicy food might struggle. The side vege, while not the main role of the dish, looked miserable.

Fu An Restaurant Kuala Kangsar Hainanese Chicken Chop

Fu An Restaurant, a low profile old restaurant in Kuala Kangsar, serves great authentic food despite having just an elderly chef handling the whole place.

Fu An Restaurant Hainanese Chicken Chop
Fu An Restaurant Kuala Kangsar Hainanese Chicken Chop

Fu An Restaurant’s signature dish the awesome Hainanese Chicken Chop (RM14). It was the best chicken chop I ever had so far in my life, that I ordered another take away to enjoy it a second round!

The chicken chop was coated in a very thick batter that looks like it’s all eggs (imagine the chicken covered with fried eggs). The chicken chop was perfectly fried, retaining its juicy and tender meat. The onions with tomato sauce bring in the tangy flavors and wetness to the chicken chop nicely. French fries and salad accompanied the chicken and the whole eating experience was just remarkable!

Fu An Restaurant Spring Roll

Another special dish of Fu An Restaurant is the Spring Roll (RM6/RM12). The tasty spring roll was full of meat and I got surprised with large pieces of chicken liver in it (I never had spring rolls like this).

Gopeng Hill Asam Laksa is a distinct shop located deep on a hill, through a inner road of a village in Gopeng, Perak. To gauge on the daily demands, the shop requires customers to make reservation at least a day before (even for their asam laksa), or else you won’t be allowed to dine in.

While some criticize the taste of their asam laksa not authentic, I find the flavors special and enjoyable. Compared to the usual ones, Gopeng Hill Asam Laksa’s broth obviously tasted more sour. It was also considerably more hot and spicy, with a strong hint of sweetness. There weren’t a lot of ingredients inside. The crispy bean curd skins help make the dish more interesting.

Mixed reviews are received but for me, the score would be somewhere in the middle. The bread itself is just a normal baked bread but as you know, any bread dipped in curry is a delicious bread. The curry wasn’t any special to be honest, but it wasn’t anywhere bad too; maybe a little too oily but the taste and thickness is decent.

Other than chicken curry, Yau Kee Restaurant also have lamb curry (RM41/RM69) or herbal chicken (RM36/RM57) in their breads.
