Strangers at 47 in Section 17, Petaling Jaya started in 2014 and is still going strong and popular. Offering crepes as their signature menu, they attract both cafe hoppers and casual food tasters alike.

On this visit, we ordered 2 savory crepes and shared among 3 person, and it was quite filling. The Shore To Please (RM26.50) is a seafood savory crepe with Cajun style tiger prawns, battered squid, sautéed spinach, caramelized onion, cherry tomatoes, and salted egg yolk sauce. All the meat and vege pair well with the savory crepe, and the creamy salted egg yolk sauce takes them to the next level.

Strangers at 47 crepes

The Buttermilk Chicken Crepe (RM26) is also a savory crepe with buttermilk fried chicken, housemade sauce, white and purple cabbage, and corns. Maybe because the chicken is deep fried, it wasn’t as ‘harmoni’ with the crepe as the first one. Still, the fried chicken is good. I reckon A Hen’s Crush (RM25) would be excellent with the Cajun style pan-seared chicken.

Menya Musashi 1 Utama Shiro White Garlic Ramen

Menya Musashi in 1 Utama Shopping Centre is part of a famous Japanese ramen chain known for its samurai theme and rich broths. There are 4 types of broths you can choose, infused with different flavor oils: White/Shiro (onion), Black/Kuro (garlic), Red/Aka (spicy), and Yellow/Ki (curry). The basic ramen costs RM26 which comes with their signature ingredients: bamboo shoots, black fungus and spring onions. The ‘Musashi Ramen’ costs RM32 and comes with the above, plus a slice of chashu (braised pork belly) and half of an ajitama (soy egg).

The first ramen I tried (above) was with the white onion flavored broth. The broth was rich and thick, with intense flavors of the onion oil and pork broth. If you like strong flavored ramen broth, Menya Musashi would suit your taste. The strong aroma also covers the smell of the bamboo shoots that some might reject. The chashu was decent but it didn’t feel like the star of the show. The meat wasn’t dry, but somehow flakey (I guess because it’s thin). Fortunately, the web of fat distributed all over the meat balanced it all. The noodle, however, was a bit of a let down. It felt a little soggy and not al dente enough for my preference. It kinda felt like yellow noodle.

Menya Musashi 1 Utama Kuro Black Garlic Ramen

My second try was the ramen with black garlic flavored broth. Everything else was similar but this broth was of course different from the white onion broth. It has the unique flavor of the aged blacken garlic: sweet, savory, and garlicky aftertaste.

This was an order of the RM35 lunch set (11am-3pm) that comes with green tea and a side of your choice: gyoza, chicken karaage, or small rice (teriyaki pork / mentai takana – fish roe with pickled mustard greens / cooked salmon). I chose the cooked salmon rice but it wasn’t that good: bland and dry cooked salmon.

Menya Musashi 1 Utama Operating hours:

Sunday to Thursday: 11.30am – 10pm

Friday to Saturday: 11.30am – 10.30pm

Ramen RM26

Ajitama Ramen RM28

H&H Restaurant & Catering is a simple setup yet comfortable restaurant that also do food catering in-house and on-site. They offer a wide range of menu and based on reviews, their dishes always deliver / exceed expectations.

H and H Restaurant and Catering Curry Fish Head

The Curry Fish Head (RM28.90) was more liquidly in consistency but the taste is surprisingly rich and flavorful. It is not very spicy and fish was fresh and sweet.

H and H Restaurant and Catering Kapitan Chicken

The Kapitan Chicken (RM25.20) was excellent in flavors. The spices are balance and not that strong (in a good way where the other dishes are not overpowered by this). The chicken were cooked just right (tender).

H and H Restaurant and Catering Crispy Fried Sotong

The Crispy Fried Sotong (RM20.90) also showed the chef’s skill, as they were crispy on the outside, but the squids were never rubbery. They were still tender and nice to bite into.

Serendah Tomyam tom yum soup, thai style fish and garlic fried chicken

Serendah Tomyam 河边东炎 used to operate nearby next to a river, before relocating to a shoplot. As the name suggests, the shop’s signature is its uniquely flavored Tom Yum (RM20-38, ours was RM23 for 2 pax). The taste of this tom yum is unlike any others that I’ve tried. Yet, it is still, and taste, like tom yum, just that the asam (tamarind) flavor is set to the max, and the spiciness to the minimum. You could say this is a very tangy tom yum, but not too sour + a little bit of bitter flavor from the generous use of asam.

The other signature dish is their Thai Style Fish (price based on weight, ours was RM33). The tilapia fish is deep fried to crispy and top with their special black sauce. It was yet another flavor I’ve never tasted before. The sauce has a very strong onion flavor with something similar to kicap manis (sweet soy sauce), and it gets spicier the more I eat it.

Next, they also recommended the Garlic Fried Chicken (RM20/25/28) and the garlic flavor is pretty good. Lots of crispy fragrant garlic. The chili sauce is the common generic factory chili sauce.

Serendah Tomyam 6 flavor dessert

For dessert, I ordered the 6-Flavored Dessert 六味糖水 (RM5), a combination of cincau, sweet potato, longan, cendol and jelly. Pretty good and not too sweet.

Ikan Bakar Sri Nikat

Ikan Bakar Sri Nikat was an unexpected find after a hiking trip, when we drove through the small roads of Hulu Langat. After taking a short detour around Sungai Lui, we were delighted to discover this place that serves delicious food with chill village vibe.

The first thing we noticed was the dining area. There are multiple ‘island’ on the fish pond: wooden platforms with a table each for groups of diners to enjoy the food while chilling above the pond. Tilapia and ikan patin are on the menu and I believe they rear and catch the fish from the pond.

We ordered one big tilapia cut in half, one half is made into Ikan Bakar (grilled), the other into Ikan Belada (chilied). The grilled tilapia (Ikan Bakar) was a little too charred on the outside but the flesh was still juicy and tasted very fresh. It is paired with two sauces: kicap manis pedas (sweet & spicy soy sauce), and their signature air asam (tamarind sauce).

The Ikan Belada is deep fried and topped with a glorious amount of their special chili sambal. The chili topping looked fiery hot but it was more savory and not overwhelming. The fish was very crispy, yet the thicker parts of the meat were still tender.

We also ordered a plate of Kangkung Belacan (water spinach with shrimp paste), two plates of Telur Dadar (omelet), rice for three person, and some drinks. The total price was RM103.

Tuesday: Closed

Wednesday to Monday: 5pm – 12am

Pokli Mee Celup & Coconut Shake at Sunway Batu Caves (also branches in Setia Alam & Pinggiran Subang) let you enjoy a bowl (or two, like me) of Kelantan’s signature Mee Celup away from the state. Their also serve other traditional Kelate food such as Perut Muda Air Asam (sour beef stomach soup) and Nasi Air (soup rice).

For some reasons their also put coconut shake in the restaurant name as a main thing. I find their Coconut Shake (RM4) lacked the richness of the coconut flavor, but it’s nice that it wasn’t too sweet. They put ice cubes in the coconut shake instead of making it into blended ice.

Pokli Mee Celup & Coconut Shake Batu Caves Mee Celup Special

The Mee Celup Special (RM7) consists of noodles, beef and an egg in a delicious bone broth that is flavorful without being too salty or “artificial”.

Pokli Mee Celup & Coconut Shake Batu Caves Mee Celup Urat Keting

Malay restaurants’ noodles portion are always too little, so here comes a second bowl. This time I ordered the Kuey Teow Celup Urat Keting (RM8.50), which has very tender beef tendons instead of meat.

I had the Tomota Soup Pork Noodle (RM20.50) and the broth was flavorful with strong tomato taste without covering the sweetness of the pork essence. Pork meat and offal were plentiful and cooked just nicely to retain their tenderness and taste. The pork liver was bouncy and not dry.

My friend order the Ketogenic menu and it was loaded with meat, super value!

The roasted chicken was succulent and tender. Even the breast meat wasn’t too dry. Rice was fragrant. The tangy chili sauce was excellent too.

Wong Kee Chicken Rice Char Siew

My favorite was definitely their melt-in-the-mouth char siew. Heavily caramelized on the surface, they also provide a bowl of thick sweet sauce just in case you want more of the saucy flavors. 75% fat 25% meat of goodness!

I had their Braised Beef Ramen (RM16.80) and the portion of the beef was quite good (can’t compared with hawker stalls but being in a mall the price is still alright). The beef broth was good and the braised beef slices were tender and flavorful. The ramen was also not bad with some al dente bite to it.
