Kedai Sate Ikan Kak Ning Chendering Kuala Terengganu

Sate Ikan Kak Ning is probably a top choice of sellers across the country, as the distributor of the authentic fish satay. Remember those roadside motorbike with charcoal grill at the back selling fish satay? A large amount of these come from Sate Ikan Kak Ning. As a distributor, they do not sell ‘hot and freshly grilled’ fish satay, but you can buy and cooked it by yourself.

Sate Ikan (400g pack / smaller pack with sticks) (RM12): Light and chewy satay snack of fish and flour combination. The fish flavor was nice and strong. The white/black pepper was stronger in some pieces and occasionally give a slight but obvious nice peppery flavor boost in the mouth. Pinkish chili sauces (sweet / hot version) were also given but the color looked very artificial. The hot version was alright but I don’t find the sweet version match the taste of the fish satay.

Sate Ikan Kak Ning Fish Satay

Other than grilling them on charcoal, you can also stir fried them with your own ideas and recipes. These fish satays are actually cooked when they sell it, but they are tasty after heating them up. These can be kept frozen for 6 months.

You may check out Sate Ikan Kak Ning Facebook Page for contacts and preorder for bulks purchase.

Sate Ikan Kak Ning Keropok Lekor

Other than Sate Ikan, they also sell other fish snacks, such as keropok lekor (ready-to-eat chips / raw thick lekor).

Keropok BB Segera (500g) RM15: Delicious ready-to-eat crispy keropok lekor chips with pretty good fish flavor.

Saturday to Thursday: 9am – 6pm

Nasi Dagang Atas Tol Cawangan 2, Kuala Terengganu

The branches of Nasi Dagang Atas Tol are few of the most well-known restaurants for Nasi Dagang in Terengganu. There are currently three branches located in Kuala Terengganu, with the first one opened in a place called, well, Atas Tol.

Nasi Dagang Ikan (RM5): The rice here was the best nasi dagang I had so far. Look at the shine from each grain of rice, nicely coated in rich coconut milk and oil! It tasted so buttery and aromatic. The fish and rice combinations don’t look special, but it’s when you tear the fish into flakes and eat it with a spoonful of rice, you’ll get the enjoyment out of it. The curry wasn’t spicy and it’s more towards the sweeter side. Some pickled vegetables help cleansing the taste buds.

Keropok Lekor (RM0.50 per piece): This was the kind of thick keropok lekor with enough airspaces inside that I like. It’s crispy outside and had the right amount of chewiness inside. I like their lekor’s strong taste of fish too!

Nasi Dagang Atas Tol Teh Peng Ombak Rindu Teh Air Buih

Teh Ais Buih / Teh Peng Ombak Rindu (regular / sederhana) (RM5): Extra foamy iced pulled tea. I like that the tea wasn’t overly sweet and the aroma was pretty good too. The foam had a slightly sweeter taste and a creamy flavor so it’s enjoyable to ‘eat’ it and not just for show.

Nasi Dagang Atas Tol Nasi Minyak Gulai Daging

I also brought packed Nasi Minyak Gulai Daging (RM6) to Kapas Island for lunch. The colorful Nasi Minyak (oil rice) was tasty too. It had the right amount of oiliness and the right ‘individualistic‘ grain’s texture. The beef curry was superb! The meat was very tender with juicy flesh and soft tendons, and it had a kind of aromatic flavors that made me think if I was actually eating lamb.

Warung Pok Nong Sotong Celup Tepung Kuala Terengganu

Warung Pok Nong is a famous place by the coast of Kuala Terengganu for Sotong Celup Tepung (Deep Fried Squid with Flour Batter).

Instead of cutting it for you, their Sotong Celup Tepung were served whole, with a scissors for you to cut it by yourself. The prices are based on the size of the squids, I took the smallest one available for one pax, for RM12. The fried batter was very crispy and didn’t feel oily even after eating a huge amount.

The big Keropok Lekor (3 for RM2) tasted good but the texture was the compact kind without much airholes, so it’s more chewy and sticky.

Warung Pok Nong Sotong Celup Tepung

There were creamy fillings inside the squid, not sure if it was its eggs and organs, but it felt like it had additional fillings of cream or something.

A bottle of delicious chili sauce is placed on every table as the dipping sauce for your food. The bottle on my table felt warm, so I guess it was freshy made. The their delicious chili sauce is probably what makes Warung Pok Nong stand out. The sauce was thick, not really spicy but had a nice balance of sweet and sour appetizing flavors.

Warung Pok Nong Air Nyuir

Air Nyuir (RM3): Iced sweeten coconut water to enjoy by the hot tropical seaside.

Their ordering system goes by this: 1) Queue up at the entrance; 2) Take a number for your table; 3) Order and collect drinks from the drinks counter; 4) Wait at the table for your number to be called; 5) When your number is called, head to the food counter to pick the food you want; 6) Bring the food to the payment counter and make the payment; 7) Finally, bring your food back to your table and enjoy your meal.

Warung Pok Nong Pantai Mengabang Telipot

The ocean is just across the small road in front of the restaurant.

Wednesday to Monday: 3pm – 7.30pm

Sotong Celup Tepung (Price based on size)

Ikan Celup Tepung (RM3)

Restoran Singgang Budu Kuala Terengganu

Restoran Singgang Budu is a restaurant that got famous due to a visitation by a famous international foodie. The restaurant relocated to a different location to cater for a bigger crowd. The food, however, wasn’t up to my expectations. The dishes such as Ikan Keli Berlada (catfish chili) and Ayam Masak Kicap (balck sauce chicken) were acceptable, though could be better.

Restoran Singgang Budu Singgang Daging

What’s really bad was their supposedly signature dish of Restoran Singgang Budu, Daging Singgang (RM5). It was a dish with chunks of beef in the soup. The soup tasted pretty lame and weak. The chunks of meat have tendons so tough that were almost impossible to chew, and would often get wedged in between the teeth instead.

Also, their system goes by: 1) self collection of food; 2) line up at the billing counter to get your bill printed; 3) head over to the payment counter to order your drinks and make the payment; 4) and lastly, wait at the drink counter to collect your drinks. By the time you’re ready to sit down and eat, hot dishes would already become cold.

Ayam Gulai (RM4): The chicken curry was so so. The curry was kind of sweet and the chicken meat texture was a little rough.
