Akok Belahat Jeli

Enjoy this soft, custardy and sweet egg desert at Akok Belahat. Akok is a traditional desert/snack in Kelantan and Terengganu. It is made with flour, sugar, eggs, and coconut milk.

This shop at the side of the road in Kampung Belahat is probably the best and most famous akok shop in Jeli, Kelantan. I like the strong eggy taste of these akok (3 pieces for RM2; 8 pieces for RM5). I’m guessing that brown sugar or palm sugar is used as their akok have a darker color and deeper flavors of dark sugar. They were pretty sweet though (typical Kelate sweetness).

Akok Belahat Kelantan

Looking behind the ordering counter, you can see how these delicious akok are made traditionally: baked in a brass mold covered with smoldering charcoal.

Waiting time may be long when there is a queue, as the akok are slowy baked rounds by rounds. I received them fresh out of the charcoal are they were hot!

If you are planning order a large amount, or don’t want to wait in queue for a long time, you may call them at +6019 980 8457 / +6011 1080 8831 to preorder.

Restoran Kak Zah, Gua Musang Nasi Dagang Kelantan Food

Not distracted by the many choices of dishes, I order just the simple set of Nasi Dagang Gulai Ayam (RM6.50). The rice here at Restoran Kak Zah could easily be one of the best nasi dagang I had. There are a selection of white rice, nasi minyak, nasi kerabu, and nasi dagang. I opted for nasi dagang and the rice was nicely cooked in rich coconut milk. Even though I had packed it for a few hours before eating it, the rice remained wholesome and shiny. The nasi dagang is cooked with a certain ratio of white rice and glutinous rice, hence a little more sticky and firm in a nice way. For the chicken curry, the chicken meat was decent and the curry was aromatic and flavorful. It wasn’t so much of spiciness but more on the flavors of the spices.

Even this cat approves *cat paw thumbs up*

Hayaki originates in Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Now, they have opened several branches across Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Based on my dining experience at Hayaki, the food were decent, yet lacked the better ‘Kelate’ flavors. Still, it is a good option when you’re craving for Kelantanese food.

Hayaki Nasi Kerabu Ayam Percik

Nasi Kerabu Ayam Percik RM14.90: Overall the nasi kerabu was tasty, it’s just that the rice was stuck in clumps and lacked fragrance. You shall mix all the vegetables, crackers, and mince the salted egg into the rice. The chicken had some good roasted flavors with some charred surfaces, the meat was a little dry outside but the inside was rather tender. The small bowl of sauce was very sweet (not unusual because Kelantanese food is generally on the sweetish side).

Hayaki Nasi Ulam Ayam Goreng

Nasi Ulam Ayam Goreng (RM11.90): It was alright but definitely could be better. The fried chicken was a little dry. The raw vegetables’ freshness was alright.
