Nipp-iLicious Japanese Takeaways in Westport is a hearty Japanese restaurant for dine-ins and takeaways.

Pork Ramen ($15): A hot comfort bowl of simple beef ramen with egg and scallions. 

Beef Curry Rice Cup ($9): There is a bowl (bigger) portion option but I opt for the smaller cup portion since I had the ramen and chicken roll. It’s Japanese style curry with tender beef and carrots on steamed rice.

Chicken Wrap ($9): Compact and well balanced with protein and greens with proper amount of sauces.

Arigato Mums Sushi Wairoa New Zealand

Another local’s favorite I found when I was searching for a place for breakfast. Mum’s Sushi Wairao is a sushi shop in the small town of Wairoa that serves delicious Japanese food. I had two fried origiri (compact rice balls) that were made differently, one into balls on a stick, and another one’s cut out like a slide of cake. They were quite filling as they are mostly rice with some other ingredients for flavors. I also had a piece of unagi (eel) sushi and a piece of prawn tempura roll. The cost in total was $12.60.

Mum’s Sushi Operating hours:

Sunday: Closed

Monday to Friday: 8am – 4.30pm

Saturday: 8am – 2.30pm

Sushi Donburi Kihikihi Japanese Food

When passing by Kihikihi and Te Awamutu while doing some hikes around Waikato region, this Sushi Donburi shop in Kihikihi, operated by Japanese staffs, is my favorite place to drop by for lunch or a quick meal. The shop’s dining area is quiet most of the time but it seems to be the locals’ favorite place to grab a ready-meal takeaways of bento or sushi for their daily errands.

Most of the donburi such as chicken/salmon teriyaki and katsu chicken are ready-made in bowls, except for the Sashimi Don (16.50NZD). The raw salmon were fresh and sweet. Beneath them are salad and rich dressings with rice, and the avocado makes it richer.

I also had the Spicy Ramen (10.80NZD) once, but it was the Korean Instant Ramen kind instead of the actual Japanese Ramen (they did inform me about this when I ordered it). They do cook and serve Udon though.
