Warung Pok Nong is a famous place by the coast of Kuala Terengganu for Sotong Celup Tepung (Deep Fried Squid with Flour Batter).
Instead of cutting it for you, their Sotong Celup Tepung were served whole, with a scissors for you to cut it by yourself. The prices are based on the size of the squids, I took the smallest one available for one pax, for RM12. The fried batter was very crispy and didn’t feel oily even after eating a huge amount.
The big Keropok Lekor (3 for RM2) tasted good but the texture was the compact kind without much airholes, so it’s more chewy and sticky.
There were creamy fillings inside the squid, not sure if it was its eggs and organs, but it felt like it had additional fillings of cream or something.
A bottle of delicious chili sauce is placed on every table as the dipping sauce for your food. The bottle on my table felt warm, so I guess it was freshy made. The their delicious chili sauce is probably what makes Warung Pok Nong stand out. The sauce was thick, not really spicy but had a nice balance of sweet and sour appetizing flavors.
Air Nyuir (RM3): Iced sweeten coconut water to enjoy by the hot tropical seaside.
Their ordering system goes by this: 1) Queue up at the entrance; 2) Take a number for your table; 3) Order and collect drinks from the drinks counter; 4) Wait at the table for your number to be called; 5) When your number is called, head to the food counter to pick the food you want; 6) Bring the food to the payment counter and make the payment; 7) Finally, bring your food back to your table and enjoy your meal.
The ocean is just across the small road in front of the restaurant.
