Mangonui Fish Shop: World’s Famous Fish & Chips?

World's Famous Mangonui Fish Shop fish n chips North Island New Zealand

I discovered the proclaimed world’s famous Mangonui Fish Shop only when I booked a hotel in the small settlement of Mangonui. Knowing that it is quite touristy with higher pricings from the reviews, I decided to give it a try, to see if it’s worth it.

I ordered the Lemonfish with a scoop of Regular Fat Chips (15NZD). The lemonfish has a medium texture (neither too soft nor too firm) with a mild flavor. The fish fillet was pretty well battered and fried. The hot chips were nicely deep fried with a creamy flesh. All in all, the fish and chips were delicious. The pricing of 15NZD is not too bad compared to most parts of New Zealand, though some may think it’s overpriced in this small settlement of Mangonui.

Later that night, I ordered another batch of fish and chips from the nearby, more budget friendly Mangonui Fresh & Tasty Takeaways, to compare the taste.

One attractive perks of eating at Mangonui Fish Shop is that the shop is sitting on top of the water. You get to enjoy the sea view, while having your hot and delicious fish and chips.

  1. Greatly disappointed with todays lunch, we ordered blue nose and chips from the surly lady at the counter. When the food arrived the two small pieces of fish which were $15.00 each were overcooked and the frozen chip were very mediocre! Very, very disappointed.
