Awarded with the best food truck award in Wanaka, Burrito Craft serves great Mexican food made with passion.
I had their 3 taco set ($21) and I chose the Fish Taco, Mushroom Taco and Beef Taco, all of them were great! (They are served mild to medium spiciness)
Crispy monkfish is used in the fish taco, together with pickled cabbage, radish, spring onion, coriander, chipotle mayo and a dash of hot sauce.
The vegetarian mushroom taco has roasted pepper, spinach, potato, guacamole, tinga salsa, chickpea & garlic popcorn, pickled onion, cabbage and coriander.
For the beef taco, it is smoky shredded beef, with guacamole, cabbage, pickled onion, chickpea & garlic popcorn, coriander and tinga salsa.
For the burrito, I order a small Pulled Pork Burrito ($16). It uses Yucatan pork shoulder, zesty rice, re-fried beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, burrito sauce, roasted tomato salsa, shredded lettuce, spring onion and shredded cabbage.
In additional, you’ll get to choose the heat level from 1 (Mild) to 10 (Face Melter). My naïve thought at that time was: “Well, it’s New Zealand, I had Indian food with extra spicy menu here that didn’t taste spicy at all… How bad could it be?”
So, I opted for level 9 (I think level 10 wasn’t available that time). The moment I bite into the burrito: instant regret (I have been warned). It wasn’t spicy, IT WAS PAIN, instantly!
In the end, I had to bring it back to my hostel, bought a tub of yogurt, and chuck a load of it every couple bites of the burrito when it got unbearably spicy/painful. Moral of the story: try a lower heat level first before moving up to the danger zone!
