If you are craving for hot & spicy fried chicken, Firebird Wanaka is the place to go!

I had their 2 Piece Hotbox Set ($18), which includes two good size pieces of boneless Firebird fried chicken, refreshing slaw and fries. You can choose between salt fries, smoky fries, spicy fries, or no fires with extra slaw. I would recommend the smoky or spicy fries because that’s their specialty flavors.

For the fired chicken, you can choose your spice level from ‘Smoky’ (level 1, not spicy, just the flavor) to ‘Stupid Hot’ (level 6). I opted for ‘Proper Hot’ (level 5) and as a spicy food lover, I love it! It was rather spicy but not overwhelming for me. I also love that the flavors are not plain spicy, but a fusion and explosion of different spices and fragrance.

In the box there was also a mini cup of Firebird Hot Sauce, which was 70% chili oil but still pretty good.

WanaFusion Wanaka Khao Soi vs Galbi Jjim

WanaFusion is an Asian fusion restaurant in Wanaka. When I visited the restaurant, they had the summer special menu. One of the item is the Khao Soi Vs Galbi Jjim ($32). It is a fusion between Laos and Korean cuisine. Khao Soi is a Laos / North Thailand food, consists of egg noodles in curry broth, topped with crispy fried noodles. Galbi Jjim is a Korean braised short ribs (beef is used here).

Together, they fused into a delicious dish of rich curry noodles and braised beef. The beef short ribs were so tender they melt in the mouth!

Burger Club Wanaka is locals and visitors top choice of burger joint in town.

I had the Club Cheese Burger ($14.50) and Club Chicken Burger ($17). Both were on point in flavors, and the patties were pretty thick and filling.

The Club Cheese Burger consist of sesame bun, smash beef patty, cheese, pickle, Club Sauce and lettuce.

The delicious Club Chicken Burger uses crispy fried chicken with lettuce, spiced mayo and pickles. It still tasted good after a few hours in the wrapper.

Burrito Craft Wanaka Tacos set

Awarded with the best food truck award in Wanaka, Burrito Craft serves great Mexican food made with passion.

I had their 3 taco set ($21) and I chose the Fish Taco, Mushroom Taco and Beef Taco, all of them were great! (They are served mild to medium spiciness)

Crispy monkfish is used in the fish taco, together with pickled cabbage, radish, spring onion, coriander, chipotle mayo and a dash of hot sauce.

The vegetarian mushroom taco has roasted pepper, spinach, potato, guacamole, tinga salsa, chickpea & garlic popcorn, pickled onion, cabbage and coriander.

For the beef taco, it is smoky shredded beef, with guacamole, cabbage, pickled onion, chickpea & garlic popcorn, coriander and tinga salsa.

Burrito Craft Wanaka Face Melter super spicy pulled pork burrito

For the burrito, I order a small Pulled Pork Burrito ($16). It uses Yucatan pork shoulder, zesty rice, re-fried beans, cheese, guacamole, sour cream, burrito sauce, roasted tomato salsa, shredded lettuce, spring onion and shredded cabbage.

In additional, you’ll get to choose the heat level from 1 (Mild) to 10 (Face Melter). My naïve thought at that time was: “Well, it’s New Zealand, I had Indian food with extra spicy menu here that didn’t taste spicy at all… How bad could it be?”

So, I opted for level 9 (I think level 10 wasn’t available that time). The moment I bite into the burrito: instant regret (I have been warned). It wasn’t spicy, IT WAS PAIN, instantly!

In the end, I had to bring it back to my hostel, bought a tub of yogurt, and chuck a load of it every couple bites of the burrito when it got unbearably spicy/painful. Moral of the story: try a lower heat level first before moving up to the danger zone!
