KY Fast Food & Restaurant in Stratford has easily became my most favorite Chinese restaurant when passing between New Plymouth to the South. It is also a great place to fuel your tummy before and after a hike at Taranaki National Park. Operated by a Cantonese-speaking pair, they serve amazing Hong Kong style dishes, along with Western fast food.
The Roasted Duck Rice (19.50NZD) has a huge piece of wholesome savory roasted duck. The skin was very crunchy and the duck meat wasn’t dry at all. The plates are large so you may think the food in my pictures look like a normal portion but they are all served in a pretty huge amount with generous potions of ingredients!
BBQ Pork Chop Suey (17NZD): Huge potion as always, with loads of char siew pork outdoing the vegetables. The amount of char siew I got in this plate was almost three times the amount I would get from a plate of char siew rice back in Asia! While they are not award-winning, melt-in-the-mouth kind of char siew, they were good and had a the tasty smoked meat flavors. The saltiness was on the heavy side so the huge amount of rice might still not cover it.
If you don’t feel like having rice or BBQ pork, the Beef Chow Mien (17NZD) is a decent dish too. The beef slices were tender and savory. Though I find the sauce too salty and the noodle too soft for my liking.
The Sweet and Sour Pork (17NZD) is one of the locals’ favorite at KY Fast Food & Restaurant. I had them as takeaways and as usual, the amount can feed 3-4 person if you have them with rice. It is not as good as the ‘gu lou yok’ I usually have in Malaysia. The outer layer’s texture and the sweet & sour sauce have a lot to improve but I still enjoyed these meaty goodness.
I also had the Beef Fried Rice (17NZD) as takeaway. Couldn’t go wrong when you are craving for fried rice at Ky Fast Food & Restaurant in Stratford.
